Amateur Competitions

Fabulous Prizes for Amateurs!

Block Pack: A competitor must carry steel pulley-blocks, one in each hand, as far as they can, before dropping them on the ground. Competitor who carries them the farthest wins. In the event of a tie, winner is who did it the fastest.

Pulp Toss: Similar concept as horseshoes. Competitors toss small logs of various lengths and diameters and try to land them between goal posts. Highest score wins.

Caber Toss: Competitors attempt to toss a small log as far as they can. Cabers can vary widely in length and diameter. Typically, the object is to throw the log such that it flips end over end hence increasing the distance thrown.

Peavy: A logging tool used for rolling and positioning logs. It has a wooden handle with a steel spike and pivoting hook at the end. Competitors typically have to use the peavy to roll a log a certain distance or through an obstacle course. Fastest time wins.

Wrapper Throw: Competitors must throw chokers or ‘wrappers/binders’ over a loaded logging truck and secure them as required by judge. Fastest time wins.

Axe in Tree Stump

Professional Competitions

Axe Throw:

Similar concept as darts. Axe thrown at round wooden target from a distance of 20 feet. Highest score after 3 throws wins.

Axe Throw Overall First Place wins $100

Single Bucking:

Using an old style cross-cut saw or ‘misery-whip’, sawyers cut cross-sectionally through an approximately 16-20” diameter log which is mounted horizontally on a stand. Fastest time wins.

Men's Single Buck First Place wins $100

Women's Single Buck First Place wins $100

Double Bucking:

Same as single bucking but with a partner. A handle is attached to both ends of the cross-cut saw so it can be pulled through the wood from both ends.  Fastest time wins.

Men's Double Buck First Place wins $100

Women's Double Buck First Place wins $100

Power Saw:

Same as single bucking with a cross-cut saw but a modern chainsaw is used. There are several variations to this event. Stock chainsaws of equal capability are used. A sawyer may have to hit certain marks made on the log to demonstrate skill. Fastest time wins.

Men's Power Saw First Place wins $100

Women's Power Saw First Place wins $100

Horizontal Hard Hit:

Also known as Horizontal Chop or Underhand Chop. Typically, a 12-16” diameter log about 26” in length is mounted horizontally on a stand. The chopper stands on the block and chops between their feet. The object is to cut through the block in as few swings as possible, requiring the judge to count their hits. Time constraints apply. In the event of a tie, win goes to chopper who completed the block the fastest.

Men's Chop First Place wins $100

Women's Chop First Place wins $100

Log Loader:

Competitor must use a heel boom loader to stack or otherwise configure log segments as required by the judge. Fastest time wins.
